Origin: Windmill Vineyard, Yolo County; Hurley Vineyard, Napa Valley, California
Farming Practices: Organic
Why we love it:
Who: Husband, wife team Steve and Jill Matthiasson have been champions of sustainable, regenerative farming in Napa Valley since 2003. Not only do they create beautiful expressions of classic varietals like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, they also experiment with more obscure varietals like Ribolla Gialla that also thrive in the Napa Valley climate. Steve and Jill are the poster children for not only protecting and reinvigorating farmlands but also supporting their workers and community.
What/How: Matthaisson grows the fruit specifically for rosé, which means that they keep the vines a little happier than for red wine, making plump juicy grapes that are vibrant and refreshing. To capture that zesty brightness, they harvest very early, barely past veraison, similar to the level of ripeness for sparkling wine. They capture the fruit when it is high-toned, crisp, and refreshing.
Tasting Notes: If you love Provencal style rosé this is for you! Refreshing notes of grapefruit, raspberry and white flowers. Pairs With: Frittata, farfalle with snow peas, grilled fish, sipping on the porch with friends!
